Songs, rhymes and lullabies – that is Zvěřinec (Menagerie) - the third album by Yellow Sisters which is dedicated to children and their adults. This time, the ladies involved their entire family. Their children are guests in several songs and they also participated in the creation of the album cover. The dads were not neglected either and they participated either vocally or instrumentally. The result is a colorful album which is quite different genre-wise from the previous two albums (Singalana – 2006, Tubab Woman – 2010) where every family member can certainly find something interesting.
The album began to take shape a year ago with a clear objective – to make an entertaining and funny album for children. The decision to make an album for children meant to partly abandon the idea of complex melodies and favorite genres of Yellow Sisters, as Bára Vaculíková explains: “I think that genre-wise the album is quite different from previous albums. Children’s soul needs a little more straightforward approach. We tried to simplify it a lot, so the children could sing along with us.” For a long time, it was clear that the band would make an album for children and it was only a question of time when the motherly duties make it possible. Eventually, solve the problem by everyone’s participation in the studio. “We didn’t have to convince anybody, everything emerged from the situation. Altogether we have eight children and besides the smallest one, who is now two months old, everybody participated in the album. Some of them we had to tickle a little just to make them laugh at he microphone, the older ones started beatboxing and rapping. We had a great time at the studio watching this. In the end even the dads became part of this. One of them wrote a rhyme for us and sang a lullaby to his son, another one played the cajon and Lenka’s partner even recorded the entire album, because he is our main sound engineer and where there was necessary to add a little bass or rhythm he contributed with little something of his own as well.“
The debut album called Singalana (2007, Indies Scope) and the second album called Tubab Woman (2010, Indies Scope) are recordings which have been prepared and recorded by the ladies from Yellow Sisters for a long time; they focused on every single detail in the production process. The third album was created in far less time and also in a very relaxed atmosphere. “Sometimes it was quite frantic, such a menagerie. Especially when at one point there were eight children all at once at the studio and we tried to record with them a choir of fighting ninjas.” And that’s why the new album radiates the joy of music, singing and frolic of children. The Yellow Sisters family is playing and singing and is inviting you to join them. There is nothing easier.
