ABOUT

Blues is the blood that flows through the veins of guitarist, singer and author Jan Fic. The new album entitled Homunkulus completes the original singer-songwriter's triptych of solo albums and thematically follows the previous ones Město (i.e. City) (2018) and Potom (i.e. Then) (2020). The search for personal identity in the contemporary world, like the music on this album, goes to the core. On the album, homunculus Jan Fic offers his work raw and stripped to the bone.

On the previous album Potom, Jan Fic collaborated with Martin Kyšperský, who influenced the entire recording mainly as a producer. The current recording is much rawer in this regard and, despite the blues-rock hits such as the track “Barák”, much more intimate. Jan Fic admits that it is once again a self-reflection. "So this album is mainly about humanity in various forms, and also about trying not to be just an artificially constructed pseudo-being, a homunculus, but a real person with all the elusive beauty of ambiguity that belongs to life." It was recorded in the Indies Studio under the supervision of Dušan Souček. Together with Jan Fic, who is the author of all the songs, the album features in some of the songs Radovan Kramář on keyboards and Luboš Pecina on bass guitar, with whom Fic has been collaborating for a long time in various fields. One of the songs features a guest appearance by singer Lubica Christophory.

"A friend once told me this reflection: it is said that when a person is born, s/he has an infinite number of personalities and can be whatever s/he wants," Jan Fic reflects on the creation of the album. "Gradually, however, different personalities die out, another person deliberately kills so that he can prioritize those who are more important to him. He chooses a profession, becomes a parent, for instance, gives up a hobby for that, and so on. In the end, one last personality is left. When that one dies, one goes with it. My previous albums were mainly about finding oneself and trying out different roles. On this record, I'm going back to the core, both mentally and musically, exactly according to that reasoning. I throw away all the excess and remain only human, and in the same way the music remains raw and stripped down to the bone. I'm not looking for perfection, but rather trying to capture the authenticity of the current state of mind at a given moment."
