ABOUT
Miroslav Kemel is a longtime leading Czech cartoonist and also songwriter. He plays the accordion, guitar and harmonica. After recording their debut CD Krajem šel anděl, they come with a second CD called Nic víc. The name captures the stark, simple arrangements of songs although not all the songs sound that simple. The CD contains 12 songs and it is a cross-section of Mirek Kemel’s work throughout longer period of time. Despite of the fact that Mirek Kemel presents mostly solo songs at concerts, on the album there are lots of guests were invited by Mirek Kemel and the producer of the album, Vladimír Javorský.
Arrangements and production of the new album were dealt with by Mirek’s longtime friend, not only a great actor but also an excellent musician, Vladimír Javorský who occasionally performs with his band. “Things work best when they just happen without our assistance. That’s how slowly these songs emerged and also how the entire band and cooperation with Vladimír Javorský on the new album Nic víc came together, “ comments Mirek Kemel on how the cooperation arose. On the record, Vladimír Javorský also sings and plays several instruments: guitar, ukulele, flute, shaman drum and percussion.
As Mirek’s peer, Vladimír Javorský understands Mirek’s lyrics well so he could masterfully adapt the arrangements of the songs to emotions and the message in the lyrics. Mirek Kemel’s songs are based on quality original lyrics and they are about experienced things that we encounter and with which we have to cope on our way to inner freedom. In his songs, he is not afraid of big emotions; he thinks that people shouldn’t be ashamed of their feeling and emotions such as joy, anger, fear or sadness – they are part of us and if suppressed, they lead to self-destruction. “With music I take a break from my main profession of cartoonist who follows local and world news and daily suffers over drawings which are, when possible, current and timeless at the same time which is not always possible. Music helps me to survive the stress of daily chores of submitting the artwork in time. Also, it allows me to delve deeper inside of me, into my stories without having to be funny and topical,” explains Mirek Kemel his relationship to music.
The new CD Nic Víc was, just like his first album, recorded in the AVIK studio of Michal Pajdiak who is a guest drummer and percussionist on the album. He was incredibly patient; the CD was recorded at intervals over 12 months.
On the CD, there are not only the musicians from Kemel’s permanent band - Vlastimil Konopiský (guitar) and Tomáš Görtler (accordion) and the already mentioned Vladimír Javorský, but also the guests are Petr Tichý on bass, Marie Tichá on cello, Oskar Török on flugelhorn and Mirek Linka on guitar.
