ABOUT

The Black and White World: An Electro-Poetic Defense of the Colored World of Marian Friedl

Černobílý svět (i.e.The Black and White World) is an inner confession and response to the internal and external crises of Marian Friedl and another original footprint in his musical career. He made his way from wood folklore with the band RukyNaDudy, through acoustic world music with the trio of Jitka Šuranská, jazz records with the Norwegian-Czech band NOCZ, his distinctive fusion of many genres in the projects Beránci a vlci or 11 PODOB LÁSKY to the current purely original record with significant share of electronics and sound design.

Marian Friedl sings, recites and uses a number of instruments from his instrument collection such as Carpathian whistles, double bass, clarinet, gallichon, bagpipes, etc. Co-producer and bandmate Martin Kocián (known from the trio of Nikol Bóková or the Austrian-Czech band Purple Is The Color) gives Marian’s songs a specific sound by connecting acoustics and electronics.

Marián Friedl admits that it has been taking a long time to record a conceptual original album: “Because the world became so tangled that I began to sing my poems hidden in the dark, the music album Černobílý svět was created. It is a reflection of the difficult times of recent years, urging that change is a natural part and consequence of life, even with the crises it brings. In them, we long for the security of the black and white world, but life is most evident in its complicated colours."

Černobílý svět  can also be described, with exaggeration, as "3in1". In addition to the musical electro-poems of the creative tandem Friedl-Kocián, it offers a photo book by photographer Sabrina Pasičnyková in the album's booklet, which is also Marian Friedl's poetry collection. The recording was enriched by guests Štěpán Flagar (saxophone, piano), Michal Wierzgoń (drums, xylophone), Anežka Šidlová (recitation), Pavel Motyka (violin), Stano Palúch (violin), Eliška Šidlová (vocals), Rostislav Hus (guitar).

Distinctive music with references to folk, folklore, jazz, classical music, electronic music and other genres is an invitation to travel through a colourful imaginative landscape, which is a reflection and defense of our complex colourful world. The live premiere of this project will take place on March 21 on Radio Proglas from 19:15.
