ABOUT

Trio SATO-SAN TO, composed of experienced musicians – Thom Herian (drums, samples & loops), Oskar Török (trumpet, keyboards) and Jaromír Honzák (bass) – is with its originality and experimental approach the only project of its kind in the Czech Republic. This was also confirmed on their debut album entitled Salep where the trio artfully uses and blends mysticism and ethnic music, and large areas of electronic sequences, jazzy ground and racy background of wild jungle. This year in June the trio won the competition Česká Spořitelna Colours Talents and the album release was part of the first prize in this contest.

“The album called Salep is inspired by a series of colorful influences”, explains Thom Herian,   “especially by the music of Middle and Far Orient, Scandinavian mood and atmosphere, jazz improvisation and music of modern subcultures. “ The album title means a delicious drink that is made of special ingredients and in a unique way. And that is exactly how Sato-San To approached their work on the album which contains three years material. “The songs that appear on the album draw mainly from the joint sessions which Oskar and I do from time to time,” adds Herian. The guest musicians on this album are, for example, the guitarist Petr Zelenka, Jan Chmelarčík playing zheng and the French MC of Algerian origin Al Amdiez.

The project SATO-SAN TO first came to life in the head of the drummer Thom Herian and the trumpeter Oskar Török. In 2008 they recorded a demo recording and the role of a godfather was gladly embraced by the jazz bass player Jaromír Honzák who was so interested in the project of these two musicians that he decided to support their music by performing on their new album. Today, Honzák is a permanent member of the project. And what does Sato-San To mean? Here we have clarification from Thom Herian himself: “One day, one of our friends Ulf who is learning Japanese, repeated over and over different terms. Oskar was really into one of them; he remembered the easiest one and chose it as a name for the band. It means ‘with Mister Sato’.”

In its short existence, SATO-SAN TO have already made it as the opening act for Norwegian experimenter Bugge Wesseltoft, perform in Germany and in some places in the Czech Republic and they even became residents in Jazzdock club.
